I have a headache” is one of the most common complaints heard by health professionals and it’s extremely rare for someone to go through life without experiencing one.
Living with headaches and migraines
For many, a headache isn’t simply a pain in the head, it’s a life-changing, debilitating condition that may detract from quality of life if left diagnosed or treated for any period of time.
The most common reoccurring headaches that we see here in the clinic are tension headaches and migraines.
What is a tension headache?
Tension-type headache is the most widespread headache disorder. This means that about 7 million Australians are likely to have tension-type headaches. Tension-type headaches are classified by the International Headache Society as chronic tension-type headaches when they occur for 15 days a month or more and episodic tension-type headaches when they occur less than 15 days a month.
Tension headache symptoms
- dull and persistent pain (mild to moderate) usually felt on both sides of the head or neck
- tautness and tenderness of scalp, neck and shoulder muscles
- neck movements are restricted by muscular stiffness and discomfort
- trouble concentrating and difficulty sleeping
What is a migraine?
There are almost two million migraine sufferers in Australia. This means more people suffer from migraine in Australia than diabetes, asthma, or coronary heart disease. Migraine is a very debilitating condition, affecting your ability to function in everyday life. Nearly all people who suffer from migraines report a reduction in social activities and work capacity.
Migraine symptoms
- typically severe, one-sided throbbing pain
- often accompanied by nausea, vomiting
- cold hands
- sensitivity to sound, light and smells
- may involve visual disturbances
- may involve numbness in arms or legs
Many people who suffer from migraines have done so for years with little or no change to their attacks from conventional treatment; many rely on pain medication to deal with the painful episodes.
